Can You Remove Negative Google Reviews?

If you’ve ever received a one-star review on your Google Business Profile, it’s normal to want to get rid of it. One of your first questions was probably, “Can you remove Google reviews?”

The simple answer is yes: You can remove some Google reviews, but not all of them. You can’t remove reviews on Google just because you don’t like them. Instead, Google has policies in place to let you flag reviews that are deceptive or inappropriate for removal.

Understanding Google’s policies on consumer reviews will help you manage your online business listing so you can put your best foot forward. Even if you can’t remove a bad review, there are still steps you can take to protect your business's reputation.

Reporting Reviews to Google

Google has policies that outline what kind of content is and isn’t allowed in business reviews. If you think one of your business’s reviews violates these guidelines, you can report it to Google as inappropriate. Within a few days, a Google representative will evaluate the review to decide whether it actually violates Google's policy. If so, Google will remove that review from your Google Business Profile.

Generally, Google's policy prohibits deceptive or inappropriate content in reviews. That includes things like:

  • Spam
  • Explicit content
  • Fake engagement
  • Misinformation
  • Harassment
  • Hate speech
  • Personal information shared without consent

So, how can you remove Google reviews that disobey these policies? You can report reviews using Google’s reviews management tool with these steps:

  1. Go to the Reviews Management Tool.
  2. Sign in with the email address associated with your Business Profile and click on your business.
  3. Choose “Report a new review for removal,” and select the review you want to flag.
  4. Designate the reason for flagging the review, like “spam” or “profanity.”
  5. Click “Submit” to send in the report.

You can also check the status of each review in this dashboard. Google will assess the review you flagged and either leave it on your Business Profile (if the team does not find a policy violation) or remove it (if a violation is found).

Prepare for the possibility that the Google team evaluating your flagged review may disagree with your perspective. If they decide there was no violation, the review stays. Your last option is to submit a one-time appeal of the review.

Responding to Negative Google Reviews

But how do you handle negative reviews that are not eligible for review removals?

Don’t just throw your hands up. There’s still a lot you can do to protect your business’s reputation.

Understanding the Impact of Negative Reviews

It’s hard to understate the importance of reviews in the digital age. When customers are considering a purchase, 98% of them rely on online reviews to help inform their decision. It’s no surprise that business owners want to know if they can remove reviews from Google to help improve their image online.

Identifying Legitimate vs. Inappropriate Reviews

There’s a difference between an illegitimate or fake review and a one-star review that you simply don’t like. Legitimate reviews reflect actual customers’ honest experiences with your business, so Google won’t remove them unless they violate other content policies.

By contrast, an illegitimate review either misrepresents a customer’s experience or doesn’t even come from an actual customer. In that case, you can remove a Google review for being fake.

Be Professional

The best way to deal with legitimate negative feedback is to respond professionally. When you respond to a negative review, you have the opportunity to improve that customer’s experience and change their opinion of your business. Plus, customers browsing your reviews will appreciate that you take negative feedback seriously and provide excellent customer service to address any issues that arise.

Engage With Reviewers Constructively

A combative or accusatory response to a negative review won't help your business, so resist the urge to lash out. If you get inappropriate or false reviews, report them to Google. The Google team will remove the review if it violates Google’s policies.

If you get honest negative reviews, take a breath before responding. Then, try to provide context for the problem and propose some possible solutions. You may need to move the conversation to another channel, like phone or email, to get more in-depth with the customer who left the review.

Preventive Measures

Part of reputation management is keeping your customers happy so they’re more likely to share positive reviews that far outnumber the occasional bad review.

Try strategies like strengthening your online presence and encouraging happy customers to share their experiences.

Enhancing Service Quality

No matter how big your business is or what industry you’re in, customer service makes a big difference. Focus on delivering the best services possible and back them up with excellent customer service. You’ll probably receive far fewer one-star reviews if you enhance your service quality.

Encouraging Positive Reviews

If potential customers visit your Business Profile and see lots of positive reviews alongside one negative review, they’ll probably form a positive impression of your business. The positive drowns out the negative.

So, encourage customers to leave reviews. As long as most of your customers are happy with your services, getting more reviews should help boost your overall rating.

Building a Strong Online Presence

Having a strong online presence other than your Google Business Profile will help improve your business reputation. For example, if you engage your customers on social media and optimize your website, your business will appear more trustworthy.
