How to Create Customer Testimonial Videos That Work

When a customer is trying to decide which business to choose, they’re considering countless factors. Location, price, reputation, trustworthiness, and their general impression of each brand—to name just a few.

Word of mouth has long played a major role in consumer decision-making, and customer testimonial video can easily sway shoppers one way or the other. Over 70% of customers trust a business more after seeing positive testimonials, making them much more likely to complete a purchase.

Video testimonials make an even bigger impression on shoppers than written ones, and yet many businesses don’t have any of these videos to show customers. That’s a missed opportunity.

Learn how to create customer testimonials from start to finish so you can boost conversions.

Why Every Business Needs a Customer Testimonial Video Strategy

New customers are first and foremost trying to figure out if they can trust your business. They don’t want to waste their hard-earned money or have a bad experience by choosing the wrong business to patronize.

So, they turn to reviews. Over 60% of customers say they check Google reviews before visiting a business, and around 45% say they check Yelp first. Seeing a lot of positive reviews for a business reassures customers that the business is trustworthy. If lots of other customers had a good experience, they’re likely to have a good experience, too.

However, there’s always some doubt with written reviews. They could be fake, AI-generated, or not even from real customers. That’s why video testimonials stand out.

Video testimonials let shoppers see that there’s a real person behind the review, helping them stay engaged and form a stronger emotional connection. That connection makes the testimonial more persuasive, leading to higher conversions.

The Secret Sauce of a Powerful Testimonial Video

More than anything else, the most effective testimonials are authentic. If the customer comes across as scripted or overly polished, the testimonial will seem less believable to the audience. So, don’t try to tell the customer what to say. Encourage them to speak naturally, like talking to a friend about their experience.

Ideally, the content of the testimonial would hit the Hero’s Journey structure, which includes these stages:

  • Baseline: What the customer’s life looked like before they found your business. What were they struggling with?
  • Frustration: The tipping point that forced the customer to finally take action.
  • Your role: How the customer found your business and the solution you provided.
  • Process: What it was like working with your business and overcoming challenges.
  • Transformation: The final results the customer achieved through working with your business.

Don’t compromise authenticity to force this structure, though. Just ask questions that help the customer explore these ideas.

Try to keep the customer focused on one specific problem they had and the solution you provided. These specific stories are more compelling to customers than a generic “We like them and had a positive experience.”

Some people think the answer to “What is customer feedback?” is just anything a customer says about a business, but that’s not quite right. The best feedback is grounded, specific, and authentic.

The Best Questions To Ask For High-Impact Interviews

Your role as the person asking for video customer testimonials is simply to guide the customer through the process. Ask the right questions, and a great video will likely follow.

Try these open-ended questions to trigger emotional and descriptive responses from your interviewee.

  • What were you struggling with before finding our business?
  • What was the aha moment that made you finally decide to look for a solution?
  • How did you discover our service?
  • Why did you choose us over our competitors?
  • What was the process like on your end working with us?
  • What specific metric or result that we delivered are you most pleased with?
  • What would you say to someone who is on the fence about hiring us?

Be open to letting the customer cover topics you may not be expecting. It’s better to have more content from the customer as opposed to not enough. When you finalize the video, you can always cut out extra content that’s not as relevant.

Pro Tips for Filming Without a Hollywood Budget

You don't need a huge budget to film high-quality, persuasive customer testimonials. A lo-fi (low fidelity) production can sometimes seem more authentic while also being more cost-effective.

Try to prioritize natural light, like by filming outside or near a large window. More natural light means you won’t need as many artificial lights. You can also just record on your smartphone—you don’t need a fancy professional camera. Most smartphones today have excellent cameras that record high-quality video.

Just don’t try to record without a microphone. The built-in microphone on your phone won’t be enough to record clear audio while filming. Instead, purchase a cheap lapel microphone for the customer to wear while speaking. The microphone will ensure crisp audio that’s easy for shoppers to hear and understand.

Where To Share Your Videos for Maximum Reach

Once you have your customer video testimonials, it’s time to put them to work. You need to get the videos in front of customers who are considering your business.

The first place to upload your customer testimonials is to your website. Consider creating a testimonials page where you can highlight the most compelling videos and written reviews to convince customers who are on the fence. You can also add the videos to related service or product pages. Just don’t let the testimonials become the focus there.

Beyond your website, share your testimonial videos on your social media feeds. Integrate your most persuasive testimonial into your email signature, too. Anyone reading your email messages will see the added visual content and hopefully engage further.

Turning Long Interviews Into YouTube Shorts and Reels

Testimonial videos can be five minutes or longer, which is too long to share on many social media platforms. At least, that’s too long to best engage your audience. The solution is simple, though: break up your longer interviews into short-form video clips.

Short-form videos can be up to three minutes long, but the sweet spot is usually 10–60 seconds. Find sections of your interviews that would make sense as shorter clips, and edit them down into vertical videos like YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.

These days, audiences are eating up short-form videos, so hop on the trend. Maximize your social media visibility and engagement on your testimonials by creating these clips. If you’re not sure how to approach this strategy, refer to our short-form video guide for help.
